Condition of I-70 is absurd

1 min read

If you drive on Interstate 70 between Washington and Wheeling, W.Va., you probably will not even need to read further to know why this letter is being written. If you do not drive that section of road, consider yourself lucky.

For the second consecutive winter, potholes have made that stretch of highway nearly impassable in spots. In the middle, where the two strips of pavement meet, there is often no road remaining. It has become nearly a continuous line of potholes, some of them really significant, which have made passing another vehicle almost impossible. You simply are not able to move from lane to lane safely.

Last year at about this time, PennDOT, when faced with the same problem, used cold patch to fill some of the holes, and that has mostly disintegrated. I know our roads are a joke, usually a bad joke. But this is absurd.

If this is the best we can do to maintain one of the busiest highways in the country, changes need to be made, starting at the top.
