We want to hear from you

Yes, 2015 still has that new-car smell, and everyone is still entitled, almost one week into it, to feel a sense of optimism about what the next 12 months will bring.

But life being what it is, the next year is certain to bring its share of controversies, dissension and debate, both within Washington and Greene counties, and on the national and international stages.

And we’d like to have your voices be part of the discussion.

The letters to the editor that appear both in the print and online editions of this newspaper are a way for our readers to express their opinions and add their perspectives to a dialogue that ultimately makes our democracy and society stronger.

However, there are some rules we ask letter writers to adhere to. Concision is best when it comes to letters, and your letters should be addressed to the editor. They should not be directed at other individuals, whether it’s an elected official who has gotten your goat, or the jerk who cut you off in traffic.

And letters that largely center on personal problems will not be accepted, nor will letters that stereotype or denigrate people based on their race or religious faith. Also, we ask you not send letters where their primary purpose is thanking someone. If you have the chance to thank them in person, or send a note, please do so – they will appreciate it.

Your phone number and address should be included for verification purposes. And letters are subject to editing.

The poet and critic Ezra Pound once forecast letter writing would be dead by 2000. Fifteen years later, you have the opportunity to prove him wrong.
