No poor sportsmanship displayed
After reading the letter by Carla Miller published Jan. 15 about what she described as poor sportsmanship displayed by Trinity High School students, parents and administrators at a basketball game against McGuffey High School, I was appalled. I am a senior at Trinity and was a member of the student section at the Jan. 13 game.
As a dedicated fan, I have attended many of my school’s sporting events. I am also a member of the varsity golf team. I have seen my fair share of poor sportsmanship. According to the WPIAL rules for fans at high school sporting events, booing is an appropriate behavior. By no means were our intentions or actions at the game a display of poor sportsmanship, we were simply cheering for our team as all true fans do. We were by no means belittling any of the McGuffey players. It would be foolish of us to poke fun at someone enrolled in the vo-ag program, as we are following in McGuffey’s footsteps to create our own vo-ag program.
As both a participant and fan, my parents and coaches have always instilled in me the importance of winning and losing with class. Despite the accusations made by Miller, I would like to apologize for anything that was said that may have been offensive to any party in attendance. Knowing that our intentions are to support our team with the utmost regard for sportsmanship, I will work with my peers to resolve any issues.
Our fans are looking forward to attending the upcoming rematch of Trinity and McGuffey and continuing the friendly rivalry in the most mature way.
