The two standards of justice

2 min read

I wish the state attorney general’s office and Visiting Judge Daniel Howsare would take the time to view the Facebook page of former Judge Paul Pozonsky before he is sentenced in July. He and his wife posted numerous photos of the wonderful time they were having in Alaska, toasting with champagne “to those who wish they were us.”

Years of drug addiction, a private inventory of drugs and leaving Washington County with $200,000 that he withdrew from his pension plan. This is not taking into account the pension Pozonsky can still take with him and withdraw $8,000 per month from for the rest of his life, or the fact he can still practice law or even run for judge.

Pozonsky took drug evidence – we will never know the actual street value – and then signed an affidavit that he destroyed it. How long was this going on while he sat in judgment of other drug offenders?

It appears we have two standards for the application of justice – one for the rich and powerful, another for the little guy. Others have been given harsher sentences for doing a lot less. Addiction is not an explanation or an excuse. It appears power corrupts when it’s in the wrong hands.

Maybe we need to test all our elected officials for drugs so this does not happen again.
