Greek life good for the community
Far too often, Greek life is portrayed negatively. The brothers at the Phi Kappa Psi Pennsylvania Alpha Chapter at Washington & Jefferson College are no strangers to the negative press. Unfortunately, all the negative press masks all the good things fraternities and sororities do for the community.
Philanthropy goes a long way, especially in a community like Washington. There is a rule in the fraternity house that each brother must complete 10 hours of community service per semester, but that’s never a problem because the brothers are overzealous when it comes to community service. So far this school year, the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi have accumulated over 1,100 hours of community service.
In addition to community service, each year Phi Kappa Psi comes up with fun and unique ways to raise money to help the community. This year was especially good for Phi Kappa Psi. Some of the events included a canned food drive, a clothing drive and a bowling tournament that raised over $1,100 to benefit the special education program at Washington Park Elementary School to buy electronics for the classroom. Altogether, the fraternity raised a total of $99,000 in the 2014-15 academic year.
With all the negative press that surrounds Greek life, it is also very important to remember all of the positive things that fraternities and sororities do for the community.
