Driving mistakes can happen at all ages

I have an issue with your Jan. 28 editorial concerning older drivers.

Pennsylvania tests 1,650 drivers aged 45 years or older each month when they renew their licenses.

Granted, this might need to be increased, as there are many baby boomers now well into their 60s and 70s. Pennsylvania also has programs for physicians, as well as anyone else, to report an incompetent driver. Yes, mistaking pedals is serious, but it happens at all ages.

U.S. Department of Transportation statistics show that senior drivers are safer drivers overall. Their fatality rate is higher, and climbs with age, due to their increasing fragility. Older drivers have problems with left turns, yield signs and merging into high-speed traffic. Who doesn’t? All people’s reflexes slow as we age.
