Fireworks had to start early in Waynesburg
On behalf of the Waynesburg Lions Club, I wanted to extend apologies for any inconvenience resulting from our decision to start the Fourth of July fireworks earlier than advertised.
Weather in the Waynesburg area was poor most of the day, with intermittent showers. We had to decide by 2 p.m. if the fireworks were going to be set off or rescheduled to some future date.
Based on the forecast, we decided to move forward as planned, and fireworks technicians began setting up for the show.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., we were advised by the fireworks technicians that radar indicated rain moving into the area at approximately 9:30 p.m., and we needed to begin the program early or risk a total loss of the fireworks.
The cost of the fireworks is approximately $8,000, and much of this expense has been offset by donations, so we did not want to risk the loss of the fireworks program or the donated funds. So, while difficult, the decision was made to hold off as long as possible and go forward with the program starting just after 9:15 p.m.
We are sorry if this sudden change in schedule caused folks to miss all or part of the display, but we saw little option given the circumstances.
The Waynesburg Lions Club has proudly served the area for over 75 years, including the Fourth of July program for the past 25 years, and we look forward to continuing this service to our community in the years ahead.
