Remember our vets

Remember our vets as we wind down this ugly presidential election year.

We’ve seen an ugly side of America over the past two years. The political divide within our country – it used to be just Democrats vs. Republicans, left vs. right, red states vs. blues states – has grown so deep that it is a canyon that might be beyond repair.

This week’s election, which was supposed to be a celebration of our democracy, has turned into cynical battle for the hearts and minds of voters. Americans have turned on each other in a vicious fight for power not seen before in any of our lifetimes.

Nearly half of the country will be disappointed – possibly enraged – by the decision made Tuesday.

But the time has come for us to reflect on what brings us together, rather than drives us apart.

While the bickering and hostility likely will continue long after our new president is sworn-in Jan. 20, we all should take time to pause and remember what brings us together.

What unites us a nation.

We have one of those reminders this Friday, Nov. 11, when we will spend the day honoring our nation’s veterans who have sacrificed so much for us and our country. Their service and sacrifice should be celebrated, and it also must be a reminder to how fortunate we are, even those who are dejected by the election.

We all want to clear the stench from this ugly campaign. The easiest way to do so is remember that we are greater as a united people than we are as divided country. Millions of men and women have sacrificed to fight for our freedoms, one of which we exercised Tuesday.

No, it wasn’t pretty. But it was democracy.

And that right was paid for by the sacrifice of our veterans. Remember that today, and every day.
