America is on the ropes

It’s now 40 years since Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” became a box office smash, when the gritty boxer from South Philly inspired underdogs everywhere to conquer their own overwhelming odds and climb whatever seemingly insurmountable steps are in their path to greatness.

The film’s soaring theme song, “Gonna Fly Now,” became the anthem of a generation.

Four decades later, following the rise of another underdog, this one punching to the presidency, America is on the ropes. Battered and bruised from a divisive election, the country is black and blue, or red and orange, from months of prolific pummeling by pundits and candidates alike.

We are on a rocky path of broken promises, with “Gonna Lie Now” the apparent anthem wafting from the White House.

Forget about making it off the canvas before the count of 10. Let’s hope we can stand again after four.

Years, that is.

Yo.
