Holding my head high, thanks to Trump

This is in response to Lynne Hughes’ recent letter regarding the Republican Party and President Trump. Her comments are long on fiction and short on fact.

For instance, Hughes says elected Republicans back home from Washington, D.C., are not holding town hall meetings because “they are ashamed of their own president,” and that “our allies look at the president in horror,” among other things. That’s fiction.

Now, let’s look at the facts:

• Republicans are not holding public events, not because they are fearful of their constituents, but because of the obstruction of Democrats. Many Republican events have been invaded by liberal thugs. These thugs have set fires, broken windows, and thrown batteries, bricks and bottles at peaceful people. Republican House members were shot for being Republican. Locally, U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy’s office was vandalized. This leftist anarchy has no place in our society.

• Unlike the last administration, Trump has affirmed U.S. support for Israel, held our NATO partners accountable for their agreed-to financial share in order to focus on terrorism, and recently vowed to protect citizens and allies from threats made by North Korea.

• Trump has met with representatives of all races, creeds, political persuasions, businesses, unions, military and police to bring us all together. After the horror in Charlottesville, Va., he clearly said no matter the color, creed or political party, we are all Americans first. Some do not want to hear that message.

• Trump clearly understands the value of a free press, but also the harm done by an untruthful and misleading press. Recently, The Washington Post reported the “breaking news” of North Korea developing miniature nuclear warheads. Only later did we learn that this was known by the Obama administration back in 2013. Then there were the three CNN reporters who had to resign. I could go on.

• Trump and the Republican Party have not sacrificed the moral character of our country. During Obama’s presidency, we witnessed a moral decline unparalleled in the history of this nation. Trump is working hard to restore the concepts of law, family and free enterprise, concepts unknown to Obama. Trump is also watching out for our veterans. He recently signed a bill which allows veterans to go to the doctor of their choice and allows the Veterans Administration to fire dysfunctional employees.

I am holding my head about as high as it’s been in a long, long time.
