A republic, not a democracy

With regard to Tom Flickinger’s Jan. 8 commentary piece on the Electoral College, I can only hope that the readers of the Observer-Reporter fully appreciate what he wrote.

Clearly, the United States is a constitutional republic, not a democracy.

Even Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and avowed socialist, got it right when he correctly identified our country as a republic in the Pledge of Allegiance.
