Agencies need to invest in youth, future

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) Why the need for a fee increase? These additional fees will go toward funding pensions and health care for employees of both commissions. Since about 1983, hundreds of thousands of outdoorsmenn have left the scene, directly causing the funding shortage. With many people no longer on our streams or out in the woods, the direct loss of revenue is in the millions for these agencies.

Not only are these agencies experiencing a lack of funds, but also local bait shops, gun stores, restaurants and other small businesses.

The agencies point the finger at parents or society for the lack of interest. Both the PFBC and the PGC have approximately eight unfunded grass-roots educational programs that could and should be offered in grade schools. Bethlehem-Center Middle School in Fredericktown has all four PFBC courses implemented. I saw the attitude shift in those children and the interest they have taken. It is truly priceless. If we get our kids interested and engaged, parents will certainly follow.

If we want the number of outdoorsmen to increase, it is time for both agencies to come up with plans that invest in our youth and the future.
