LETTER: Marijuana shouldn’t be state’s next cash cow

In the  July 27 editorial, “Time has come to legalize the use of marijuana,” we are informed that we can count Pennsylvania Attorney General Eugene Pasquale among those who think it’s time for our state to legalize and profit from recreational marijuana use.

I never cease to be amazed by politicians and editorial writers who justify legalizing a substance because of the tax dollars the state can reap, even if it’s $600 million a year.

What thought is there about the societal impact, including more impaired drivers and increased carnage on our highways?

Why not legalize recreational use of opioids as well? That sounds far-fetched, but so did marijuana’s legalization in our recent past.

Is there anything from which the state can’t make a buck?
