COMMENTARY Black History Month should be celebrated every month
Black History Month should be respected each and every day. Celebrating Black History Month shows a cultural movement. Non-minorities should also celebrate during the month, because it is a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. Also, it should be celebrated throughout the year.
The entire world should celebrate it, because they do not know how much pain we went through when we were slaves. Black History Month is a good thing. It is an annual celebration of achievements. That’s why black history should be respected and celebrated every day and not just in one month, because it is important to our world.
I have friends of other races who support Black History Month. They want the world to change because of what our ancestors had to go through. They tell me that if they could go back to when there were slaves, they would let all of them go free, and sacrifice their lives for the fight to have everyone treated equally. They just don’t support Black History Month every February. It’s marked throughout the year for them as well as me.
They say to me, “Black History Month is American history, and should be something that is taught year-round.” They understand what African-Americans have been through in order for us to be seated in the same classroom, go to the same bathroom or restaurant, and support the movement that is still going on until this day. In the past, there were cops that used to treat black people bad. They would pull them over, arrest them and send them to jail for no reason. But now, Americans support us. They will tell me that it isn’t fair that we get in trouble for no reason, and they will support us each and every day.
There should not be a separate month devoted to the learning of black history. It should happen every month because it is important. It should not just be one month. There are so many things that black people have accomplished over the years that one month is not enough to cover all of black history. It should be shared every day, and not be relegated to one month. It is the only time black people really get to learn their history.
If Black History Month were taken away, it would be just be like it was back then. There will be even more racism. February is the most important month in history, because African Americans have a month for a reason. We struggled with segregation and being beaten because of our color. Nobody should disrespect Black History Month. It exists to remember important contributions and achievements throughout our nation’s history.
There is still racism out in this world. Black History Month should be every month, and not just one.
