LETTER Moving on from an ugly past

The editorial from the Providence (R.I.) Journal the Observer-Reporter published Jan. 6 regarding the death of disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law was an important reminder of our responsibility to stop the abuse of children.

It was pointed out many people were outraged that the Vatican provided him an honorable funeral, with Pope Francis presiding, because Law was the symbol of the church’s systematic protection of pedophile priests. Equally disturbing was the hypocritical decision of the Vatican, after Law’s resignation, to appoint him to one of Rome’s most prestigious and influential churches, and allow him to serve on a committee that advises the pope on the assignment of bishops. Law was also able to participate in the 2005 papal conclave.

Perhaps with Law’s passing, the church will be able to move on from its ugly past, and his legacy keep it vigilant in the future.
