LETTER We need clean energy

Since moving here as a freshman in college, I have grown to love Pittsburgh as a spirited city with much to offer.

However, its livelihood is often hidden behind clouds of polluted air and unclean water. With the overwhelming dilemma of climate change at the forefront, Pennsylvania’s natural landscapes are at risk.

I support the 100 Percent Renewable Energy By 2050 bill that was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sens. Bernie Sanders, Jeff Merkley and Edward Markey. It promises to improve the quality of living for all inhabitants. As a young person myself, I believe that Pittsburgh’s appeal lies in its openness toward innovation. Things are constantly changing, and this effort is what draws in people of all ages.

By switching to 100 percent renewable energy sources, Pennsylvania would become a more livable place. Not only would the initiative attract young people looking to start fresh in a new city, but the community as a whole would also be more livable for children growing up in the present and future. With such cities as Philadelphia, Allentown, and Pittsburgh already on board, the entire state could use a push toward clean energy.

I encourage our elected officials to move this initiative forward to secure a more sustainable future for our community.
