LETTER: No such thing as a free lunch
The constant drumbeat of liberal socialists has risen to an all-time high. Bernie Sanders and now Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the political newcomer from New York, have an agenda. Free health care, free college tuition and guaranteed incomes among others are the things that these Democrats are pushing. However, they never talk about how much these programs will cost or how they will be funded.
Sweden and Finland are two socialist countries that have such programs. The income-tax rates in these countries average 40 percent, and there is also a sales tax or value added tax of 25 percent on just about everything that you purchase except food, which is taxed at 12 percent. Is this what we really want? I hardly think that the American public would like to have all this additional taxation.
It’s the same with government as it is with your own household finances. You have to pay for what you want. The old saying of “no such thing as a free lunch” applies to everything.
