LETTER Common sense and protests

As I have read all of the letters and columns regarding NFL players standing for the national anthem, I am convinced that many people lack common sense.

Consider, you own a business – say the Observer Publishing Co. – and one morning some of the employees decide they are going to protest some social situation unrelated to their job. This protest could involve employees from all parts of the process of producing a newspaper in an efficient manner and would undoubtedly influence production and delivery. I guess in the opinion of many, this would be fine because this country supports nonviolent protests. But wait a minute. These individuals are protesting on the job!

Just like the O-R employees, the NFL players have a job to do, and protesting is not a part of that job. Any ordinary person would lose his or her job if they tried to behave in this manner on the job. The NFL players are paid a lot of money to do a job, and their employer is ultimately the fans who buy tickets to see them play. If the players want to protest, then organize and choose a time and a place that does not conflict with their responsibility of playing football. Many fans are losing interest in football because of this inappropriate behavior at a game. I totally support their right to protest but not in this venue. It’s time to grow up!
