LETTER Long-term fix for I-70 needed

I’m reminded of Highway 1 in Vietnam in 1968 every spring when I travel Interstate 70 in our region. Repair and rebuild after mortar and rocket attacks!

My question is, who in the state is responsible for the poor construction, waste in constant patching and repaving and the toll on our vehicles? To get the job done right requires a thick enough foundation for the pavement and proper drainage. We all know the freeze-thaw cycle plays a role, but that’s the case in every northern state. What makes Pennsylvania and Washington County so different? Why the annual waste of our tax dollars? Why are we happy now that repairs are being done when we all know – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and elected officials included – that next spring we’ll be dodging the same potholes and craters all over again?

Does anyone care?
