LETTER The United States cannot survive without friends

The recently concluded G-7 summit offered precisely what one could have expected in this, the era of the topsy-turvy, chaotic, abnormal presidency: a bull-in-a-china-shop American leader who expectorates in the faces of his colleagues, engaging in bluster, bravado and bombast as he insults our allies and offers comfort to our enemy, Russia, as he pushed for it to be readmitted into the group despite its ruthless annexation of Crimea, an action which had caused it to be ejected.

The president told the leaders that if they refuse to kowtow to his demands, we will not trade with them, no doubt sending shock waves through the leaders and executives of companies whose survival depends on foreign trade.

The credo of Donald Trump is that you will do what we say or we will take our marbles and go home. He may soon learn that the United States is not able to survive and thrive without friends, friends who may turn their backs on us when we need them as we eventually will.

President Putin and his cronies could not be more pleased with the American president that they almost certainly helped to elect. What does Vladimir Putin have on Donald Trump which causes him to be blind to Russia’s actions to replace us as a leader on the world stage?
