LETTER Methane standards prove power of public input

The week of June 3, Gov. Tom Wolf took a landmark step in protecting residents of our commonwealth from dangerous air pollution at natural gas facilities throughout the state. By finalizing permits that will reduce emissions of methane and volatile organic compounds at new and modified natural gas operations, Wolf prioritized the health of citizens over an industry with deep pockets and considerable influence.
Late last month, I traveled from my home in Washington County, where there are more wells than any other county in the state, to Harrisburg to voice my support for these much-needed rules. I joined fellow impacted residents in delivering more than 30,000 petition signatures in support of these common-sense standards. Wolf has listened to our years of advocacy, and my county will be healthier as a result.
In today’s atmosphere of political cynicism and deep divides, it’s easy to assume our elected officials value contributions over constituents. But these health protections show that the public process can still work. Engaging in that process is our civic responsibility. And it can make Pennsylvania a better place to live, work and raise a family.
I drove to Harrisburg again on June 14 for the Air Quality Technical Advisory Committee meeting to voice support for these standards and call for similar standards on emissions at existing natural gas facilities. I’m proud to have made the trip and continue to be an active participant in a political process that I feel has responded to my concerns.
