LETTER Look no further than here in Pa.

I read with interest the column (June 22) by Nicolas Kristof. However, he could have used an example that took place right here in Pennsylvania.
In the late 1800s, Native American children were taken from their parents in the southwest and brought to a school in Carlisle, Pa. Authorities cut their hair. The children were not allowed to wear native dress or speak their native language. There was a deliberate attempt to wipe out the culture and religion of a generation of children, and they, too, were separated from their families and homes. No one cared about that.
If you are interested, look into the Navajo Museum in Shiprock, N.M. There are pictures of these children that will break your heart, and, yes, our government did that.
