Gesture of respect appreciated

Last Wednesday, Trinity Church in Washington buried a dear woman and good friend. As the funeral procession headed up South Main Street, we were funneled into a construction zone where Columbia Gas and Wright Construction workers were working. As soon as they saw the hearse they stopped work, removed their hard hats and placed them over their hearts until we all had passed.

I was very moved by this kind gesture of respect and care. This family has suffered some great losses over the last couple of years and to have their mother honored in this way was very touching. Thank you to those thoughtful men and women. In a world where everyone is in a rush and on the move, I hope we never lose our capacity for gracious moments such as this.

The Rev. Karen Stevenson
