LETTER Separation of chocolate and state?

I was surprised to read about Sarris Candies’ apology for hosting a visit by Donald Trump Jr. after the business was deluged by threats of a boycott. I could not help wondering when the new made-up doctrine of separation of chocolate and state was conceived.

Did Democrat Charleroi attorney Alan Benyak and other offended parties express similar dismay when candidates Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton campaigned in black churches?

Were there similar threats of boycott when political candidates were hosted in the past by Shelley’s Pike Inn in Houston?

I fear that as a nation we are in the process of giving up the right to free speech and political association. I fear that only politically correct candidate appearances are now appropriate.
