LETTER Police need to enforce traffic laws
A couple of weeks ago, I drove to my sister’s home on Eldersville Road to pick up the mail, care for the cats and take out the trash. As I drove up “Langeloth Hill,” I noticed what a beautiful day it was and decided that I would stop and visit a friend.
There were no vehicles as I pulled out onto Eldersville Road to return to Burgettstown. At some point, a red SUV appeared in my rear-view mirror. It caught up to me and began tailgating, even though I was driving at the speed limit.
I intended to turn left at my friend’s road. It is a short way down the hill from the entrance to what I still call Climax Molybdenum.
Because I was familiar with the turn and because the vehicle in back of me was following too closely, I put my left turn signal on early and began to slow down shortly after I passed the entrance to Climax Molybdenum. As I began my turn, I saw the front of a white vehicle begin to pass. I could not see it in my rear view mirror. It was following too closely to the red SUV. I could not stop my turn. Fortunately, I was not hit.
When I was a young woman, people obeyed speed limits, were taught how to drive in high school and not by parents who do not know what a speed limit is. They had respect for the law and it was enforced.
The state of Pennsylvania has the second oldest population in the nation. From one of the “‘oldsters” who continues to obey speed limits, I demand that police keep us safe by enforcing traffic laws. I would like to live beyond my 80 years!
