LETTER: Washington County’s loss

2 min read

I read of Diana Irey Vaughan’s decision to not run for re-election as county commissioner which is Washington County’s loss.

I attended a debate between Irey Vaughan and Joe Ford in the 1990s, during which she carried a bowl of mud over to Ford’s chair, and then walked back and put the bowl down by her chair. She said, “I’m going to sling mud like some here do. I’m going to tell you who I am and what I can do for Washington County.”

Although I’ve often disagreed with her political views, I’ve always had great respect for her integrity and selfless dedication to the people of Washington County.

As for the Washington County Republican Party’s vote of “no confidence” against her, well, I believe she can wear that as a badge of honor. That simply means she has maintained her integrity, moral compass and high standard of dignity. She has not stooped to the partisan mentality of “we didn’t elect you to do the right thing, we elected you to do our will.”

So, I understand there is now a sign in the window of the Washington County Republican headquarters that reads: “Help Wanted. County Commissioner Position. All Howdy Doody impersonators welcome to apply. Those of higher personal character need not waste their time.”

All the best to Irey Vaughan in her future endeavors.
