LETTER: No one should be intimidated into silence
No one should be intimidated into silence
For 50 years, I have been writing lay commentary that has been published in various newspapers and magazines throughout the country. It is a pursuit that has brought me great joy. It has also brought ugly responses, perhaps the most outlandish having been received in response to a recent letter in this newspaper.
The sender, who identifies himself by name, uses few words other than those that are profane and degrading. He ends by stating, ” I would love to beat the f— – s-t out of you and your liberal friends”.
I have reported the veiled threat to my local police department and to the FBI, which knows where the man lives and where he works.
It is unfortunate that we live in an era in which free speech is threatened. Some celebrate its concept, but if you dare to disagree with them, then you must be silenced.
Some time ago, a writer on this page made the comical and absurd assertion that my letters should not appear because Washington County is a Republican stronghold. Apparently she would insist that anyone who lives here think the way the majority does.
I do not plan to be intimidated into silence nor should anyone else who wishes to express their opinion.
