OP-ED: Bridging the gap: A vision for recreation in Marianna and beyond

By Lisa Scherer 2 min read

Residents in the southern end of Washington County yearn for an improved quality of life through enhanced recreational options. While the county boasts three parks – Mingo Creek, Cross Creek, and Ten Mile Creek – accessibility remains a challenge for Marianna residents.

Regrettably, Ten Mile Creek Park, located in Clarksville, falls short for extended walks or cycling. Unlike more affluent areas, Marianna lacks nearby bike trails. While nearby parks offer amenities, there’s limited room for growth. Looking beyond our area, Greene County’s Rices Landing trail provides a biking option just 21-25 minutes away.

However, there is potential for improvement. A trail feasibility study is done. A section of the old railroad line from Marianna to Cokeburg Junction could be transformed into a bike trail, emulating the success of the Greene County trail.

Recreation is not merely a pastime; it forms the bedrock of a vibrant and healthy community. Access to quality recreational options is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of residents of all ages, including children, seniors, and families. It fosters a sense of belonging, encourages active lifestyles, and creates spaces for social interaction. Moreover, recreation bolsters local economies, drawing in visitors and invigorating businesses. By investing in improved recreational facilities, we invest in the very essence of community vitality and the well-being of our residents. It’s time we prioritize and elevate the recreational landscape in the forgotten small towns of Washington County, ensuring a flourishing and fulfilling way of life for all.

Studies have consistently shown that investments in recreational facilities yield long-term economic benefits, including increased property values and increased tourism revenue. Additionally, grant opportunities and community partnerships can help defray some of the associated costs.

The pressing question remains: Why isn’t southern Washington County receiving the investments it merits? With events predominantly centered around Mingo and Cross Creek Parks, the community yearns for change.

This is a call to action. Scrutinize candidates, ask questions, hold politicians accountable for the promises they make, and vote them out if they fail to deliver, or only show concern around election time. It is time for them to actively help shape our community’s future, not just in words, but in actions.
