The latest disgrace that has been brought to Washington County by a row officer is the sad and disgusting case of Controller April Sloane, who is alleged to have tortured and starved a dog to death at her home.

We are known by how we treat the least among us, the defenseless and dependent: young children and domestic animals. I can envision no explanation or justification for the neglect and cruelty that took place in this instance.

The teenage son of the perpetrator is a victim as well, as it is reported that he wanted to take the dog to be treated by a veterinarian, but was shut down by his mother.

One does not have to be a dog lover or dog guardian to be outraged by what took place at the Sloane home.

It is gratifying to learn that the controller has been arrested. She must now face criminal sanction for her actions and resign or be forced out of office. She has sacrificed the ability to serve.
