LETTER: Schools need to test for radon

1 min read

Does your school district do radon testing? After all, second to only smoking and secondhand smoke, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer.

Does your school district allow smoking in any of the rooms or neglect to filter out smoke and alarms for smoke in any of the rooms? I’m sure the answer is “no.”

So, why are only 1 in 5 rooms in U.S. schools tested for radon, which is odorless, colorless, tasteless and can’t be filtered out from indoor air? Therefore, the other 4 out of 5 U.S. school rooms are not tested.

Why would a school not test for the second leading cause of lung cancer, when lung cancer is the leading type of diagnosed cancer and it is not expensive to test for radon and get rid of radon in any school room?

Let’s expect our schools to do the best testing for everyone’s better health and safety.
