Let’s all promise to “do no harm”

2 min read

OK, first the bad news: a month ago, a friend broke his right hand. He is a young, talented, hard-working and right-handed plumber.

Now the good news: an orthopedic doctor reset the bone and applied a temporary cast. In only a few weeks, he had the cast removed and he could open and close his hand without any pain.

However, he soon noticed a bump on his hand and returned to the surgeon’s office. It was just calcium and part of the healing process. Also, a strength test revealed that he now had more power in his right hand than he had before breaking this hand.

This wisdom of nature and natural healing process reminds me of a favorite quote in Ernest Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms”. It states, “The world breaks everyone and afterwards, many are stronger at the broken places.” This quote applies to all types of injuries, including physical, emotional, mental and social harm.

The sad news, however, is that we are not helping to protect the wisdom and laws of nature or the oath to “do no harm.” We should be more proactive for our children’s health and safety where we live, work, eat, learn and play.

After all, our world today is not the same kind of place due to the harm that we all have already done.

Let’s take an oath to “do no harm” and help get back to our original nature, for more fun.
