LETTER: Hard to respect Trump
Why is it that when the U.S. Supreme Court awarded George W. Bush the presidency in 2000, Americans were told to respect the office even if they cannot accept the person holding the highest office in America?
Why is it that when Donald Trump was elected in 2016, Americans were again told to respect the office if they cannot respect the person?
In 2020, Trump did not respect the office. Neither did his followers. Trump committed crimes before, during and after his presidency. After the 2020 election, he tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power that all 44 prior presidents had carried out. His friends and attorneys all paid a price for acts committed on his behalf. His attorneys lost their law licenses. Fox News was sued for the lies they told after the 2020 election. One of his campaign promises is to pardon the Jan. 6 insurrectionists who were given jail time.
So yes, Trump is the newly elected president. Do 48% of the voters have to like it? Americans should respect the person they elect to hold the highest office in America, not just the office. They go together. It is very hard to respect Trump, the person.
