LETTER: We are protected by the Constitution
For over a decade I had the great honor of teaching the U.S. Constitution as a public-school social studies teacher. My respect for the Constitution and the wisdom of the Founding Fathers has only grown over the years.
For over two decades, I was also fortunate enough to teach at Washington & Jefferson College, named for two of our remarkable Founding Fathers.
As the presidential election approaches, I find myself thinking of the advice given by Thomas Jefferson. Never place “too much confidence in any one man…rally round the Constitution; never suffer an iota of it to be infringed; inculcate on minorities the duties of acquiescence in the will of the majority, and on majorities a respect for the tights of the minority.”
We are blessed to live in a country known around the world as the United States of America, with a motto “E. Pluribus unum.” When translated from Latin, it means, “out of many, one.” That reminds us we need each other. How fortunate we are to being able to vote in a democracy protected by our Constitution.
