LETTER: Don’t cut library funding

2 min read

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the potential funding cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Libraries and museums are vital cornerstones of our communities, providing equitable access to information, fostering lifelong learning, and preserving our cultural heritage.

Reducing the resources available to the IMLS would have a devastating impact on these essential institutions. It would limit their ability to offer crucial services, from early literacy programs and job search assistance to digital resources and preservation efforts. These cuts would disproportionately harm underserved populations who rely on libraries and museums for access to opportunities and knowledge they might not otherwise have.

It’s crucial that we stay informed and advocate for these vital institutions. I encourage readers to visit EveryLibrary’s website at https://www.everylibrary.org/statement_imls_staff_administrative_leave to learn more about these proposed cuts and how you can take action to support libraries and museums. Defunding the IMLS is a shortsighted and detrimental decision at a time when access to reliable information and community engagement is more important than ever. I urge our elected officials to recognize the invaluable contributions of libraries and museums and to ensure their continued support through robust funding.
