LETTER: Sacrifices are many
I would like to thank John F. Kennedy School student Mario Stiehler for his eloquent, award-winning essay on Americanism, published in the Aug. 17 edition of this newspaper.
I would like to expand on the sacrifice of military members and their families. Regular assignment changes lead to packing and shipping of all personal and household belongings from station to station with each move. These moves sometimes lead to lost, damaged or ruined belongings.
Children in military families have to leave friends and start over in new environments.
Our son is a U.S. Army officer, during his career has been assigned to Washington, D.C., twice, and five U.S. states. He has also served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He and his family have also served two-year assignments in Paraguay, South America and Malawi, Africa.
This is the career he chose. But only military families understand the true commitment and sacrifices they experience to serve.
I thank all of those men and women who have served for us.
