LETTER: Angels among us
I was left rattled after Tuesday morning’s snowstorm. I left my home in Windsor Highlands at 7:40 for an 8 a.m. appointment on Jefferson Avenue. The trip normally takes about eight minutes, but I figured the snowy conditions would slow things down.
As I drove out of the plan and on to Route 136, it was what I expected and I crept along like other drivers, respecting the “could be” ice under the snow and slush. I reached my destination by 7:55… no problem!
The return trip was not that easy. I got on Interstate 70 East and, once again, all seemed well. It was slow going but manageable – until I got off the interstate and turned on to Route 136. A pickup truck in front of me was desperately trying to stay on the road but was sliding and couldn’t get any traction. I kept my distance to stay out of his way. Eventually, he was able to turn into the bank’s parking lot. So, I headed (slowly) up the road and then my car did the same thing. I could not keep my car moving straight ahead. I stopped and wound my window down to signal to the cars behind me that they could go around me.
I didn’t know what I was going to do until a white truck (with what looked like emergency lights) pulled up behind me and an angel stepped out of the truck – I don’t know who he was (he was not a policeman) or why his truck had lights on it…. I do know he was an angel. He came to my window and offered to assist me. He got my car moving forward (I got out and let him drive it) and pulled it into a parking area near a doctor’s office. He was very kind and concerned for my well-being.
His selfless act gives me great hope that people are compassionate and care about others. He was a total stranger who I’m sure had better things to do, but he saved my day. I couldn’t be more grateful. I didn’t get his name, so I hope he reads the Observer Reporter so he knows how much I appreciate his help. He has restored my faith in mankind (I know that sounds dramatic, but I mean it). Thank you, sir; I am forever grateful.
