LETTER: New radio system will provide better coverage
I was fortunate to participate in a recent emergency responders forum alongside my colleague, Nick Sherman, to discuss the new public safety radio system in the county. Several hundred emergency responders attended to hear presentations from Motorola and Mission Critical Partners about our current situation and the advantages of our new system, which will revolutionize our 911 services and enhance the coverage for the mobile and portable radios used by responders.
Currently, our system provides only 33% coverage for portable radios. However, our new system will guarantee 90% portable coverage and ensure 95% mobile coverage. This significant improvement will lead to more reliable communication and enhanced safety for our responders.
The transition to a digital 800 MHz system will also enable us to join the Inter County Regional Radio System, shared by other regional counties. This advancement will facilitate communication with responders from neighboring counties during emergencies and allow us to relocate our 911 Center to another county if necessary.
From the moment I began my campaign for this office, I heard the concerns of responders and residents. I immediately joined Commissioner Sherman’s passion for this project and knew the time of kicking this can down the road had to end.
Public safety is a cornerstone of county government, and I embrace this responsibility with the utmost seriousness and dedication. We must safeguard not only those who call 911 in moments of crisis but also the courageous responders who rush into danger, risking their lives for our protection. This commitment to safety is an invaluable investment-one that transcends any monetary measure and speaks to the very heart of our community’s well-being.
