LETTER: Demolition of mall paves way for progress

2 min read

I am passionately committed to revitalizing our infrastructure through a new county Blight Mitigation and Demolition Fund program dedicated to enhancing residential, industrial, and commercial properties. Abandoned buildings often serve as barriers, stifling the growth of new businesses and developments in our community. These neglected and vacant structures contribute to economic decline, diminish our residents’ quality of life, and obstruct the path to progress. Removing these blighted properties opens the door to new possibilities and development.

A striking example of this initiative is the demolition of the long-shuttered Washington Mall, which closed its doors 11 years ago. This project is supported by our fund of up to $6 million, derived from federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. Bidding for the project and determining actual costs are in progress. The county’s decision to tear down the structure paves the way for repurposing the site with modern infrastructure brimming with potential. The owners, Chapman Priorities, envision a array of developments, including a big-box store, retail establishments, and restaurants, all contributing to a flourishing mixed-use retail destination.

The extensive backfill and environmental remediation needed have rendered development at the mall prohibitively expensive for any owner. Abandoned properties, such as the mall, not only symbolize lost opportunities but also stand as barriers that deter new businesses from revitalizing our community. These abandoned properties lead to economic decline and decrease the quality of life for residents. If we can demolish buildings like these, we can create new opportunities.

This exciting development is poised to generate significant local tax revenue for South Strabane Township and the Trinity Area School District while creating numerous job opportunities. Furthermore, this project will attract a diverse array of businesses, ignite additional job creation, and foster a vibrant commercial hub in both South Strabane and the city of Washington.
