LETTER: Embrace winter weather

Embrace winter weather

At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, our society has become increasingly fragile in the face of winter weather.

My uncles love to recount the story of how, in 1963, the temperature dropped to 32 degrees below zero and the school bus picked them up. Their teacher at the school in Scenery Hill even allowed them to walk around the playground to make tracks in the snow. Such resilience and adaptability seem to be fading from our collective mindset.

Today, however, it seems that at the first sign of snow or a drop in temperature, we cancel classes and close businesses. It is January and we live in Southwest Pennsylvania. We should expect snow on the roads and a chill in the air. Instead of adapting to these seasonal changes, we seem to have adopted a mindset of avoidance and retreat. This shift not only disrupts our daily lives but also undermines our resilience and ability to cope with the natural challenges of winter.

It is time for us to toughen up and embrace the winter weather, rather than it being an obstacle to be avoided. By doing so, we can foster a stronger, more resilient community that is better prepared to handle the challenges that come our way.
