LETTER: What’s taking so long?

1 min read

I recently read an Observer-Reporter news article stating it would take eight months to demolish the old Washington Mall. I find that difficult to comprehend. I am not discounting the effort to prepare the site for demolition. I am not discounting the environmental concerns that have already been addressed, according to the article. And I am not discounting the lowest bidder who received the project. However, despite those concerns, eight months is an unduly elongated time frame.

After all, Three Rivers Stadium was demolished in an hour. Yes there was considerable prep time, but for the Washington Mall, not that all of it is being demolished, would preparation, demolition and cleanup take more than a month?

You have waiting businesses ready to provide an influx of money and energy into Washington. So why eight months? One would think that the county would be most eager to have Costco and others established on the site with all due speed. Maybe the lowest bidder wasn’t the one you should have accepted?
