LETTER: ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ not so pretty

2 min read

In his op-ed column, “A year of results: Serving Pennsylvania’s 14th District,” in Friday’s newspaper, U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler brags that he is proud he helped President Trump pass his “Big, Beautiful Bill.” Frankly, this title is not only unserious – it’s an insult to the intelligence of the American people.

Behind this ridiculous branding is a deeply flawed proposal that threatens the economic stability of millions of hard-working citizens.

This bill paves the way for cuts to vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, programs that millions of seniors, children and people with disabilities and low-income Americans depend on to survive. These programs are not optional; they are foundational to our country’s commitment to the dignity and security of all.

Even more concerning is that the bill’s central economic feature, a massive tax cut, would overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans and large corporations while doing little or nothing for middle- and working-class families.

We’ve seen this playbook before, promises of “trickle-down” benefits that never materialize, all while deficits balloon and social programs are put on the chopping block to make up the difference.

This bill is not beautiful. It’s dangerous; it threatens the economic health of everyday Americans. Guy Reschenthaler should not be proud; he did nothing more that allow Trump to brow beat him. He is more fearful of Trump’s disapproval than he is of the impact this bill will have on those people who voted him in.
