Letter writer missed the mark

2 min read

It is stunningly amazing how letter writer John Quayle could get it so wrong. No one is saying that presently Trump is a “king.” What the contention is, and has been since his second term began, is that Trump is endeavoring to establish himself as an untouchable monarch with absolute power and immunity to all accountability. This is what a king, an emperor, a sultan and an autocrat/dictator forces his citizens to live under without any opposition to “Dear Leader.”

Trump admires autocrats like Putin, Erdoğan, and Orban as having total control over the entire state of government. He fancies himself as an absolute ruler with unquestionable power. Trump hasn’t achieved his ambitions, but the sycophant Republican toadies in Congress are very willing to allow Trump to hijack our 250-year-old democracy with nary a whimper of Constitutional opposition. The deep dread they feel of Trump’s wrath is stunningly apparent. Even more shockingly distressing is how far too many of our citizens have closed their minds to the plain facts of the abyss this country is hurling toward. If allowed to finalize his egregious plan, this democratic nation, as the best hope for self-government, will surely perish from the Earth. Once democracy is lost, it is horrifically difficult to get it back. Patriotic citizens of faithful intent cannot allow this to ever happen to our self-governing nation “of the people, by the people and for the people.”
