LETTER: Seek the better angels
These are turbulent times in our country. We now have a Secretary of War and a Department of Justice which functions more like a department of revenge. Our rich history is being erased to conserve only one cultural ideology and, unfortunately, political violence is more prevalent.
In the wake of this violence are many important pleas to tone down the rhetoric. However, this isn’t likely when the elected leadership of America is part of the problem with its normalization of rudeness and arrogance. The incivility and hate expressed by the president and vice president only serve to inflame the national discourse and postulates that retaliation trumps compromise and respect for others.
This is the wrong lesson for our children because we are better than that and should want them to be as well. Peace is only achievable through understanding and compassion.
Donald Trump would surely benefit from remembering the words of his predecessor, “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.”
We should all seek the better angels of our nature.
