LETTER: Watch, listen to Trump
While Trump Republicans have been insulting, threatening and dehumanizing anyone who disagrees with the things they say or do, Democrats, other Republicans and moderates have been trying to convince Donald Trump’s followers that he has gone too far.
The extreme right insists that any media that doesn’t agree with them is biased and only their side is to be believed. This false narrative causes people to fail to see that facts are neither right nor left, just reality. Because Trump’s supporters are unlikely to begin seeking information from less biased sources, it is difficult to change their minds.
There is one thing that might help. They should watch everything Trump does and listen to everything he says.
If they did, it is hard to imagine they would support things like ripping off part of the White House’s east wing for a “ballroom,” sending armed troops to cities where the mayors and governors insist they are not needed, prosecuting present and former officials including staunch Republicans, and using our military to perform extrajudicial killings of suspected drug traffickers on the open sea.
Trump often says outrageous things. If people had been listening to everything Trump says they’d know that May 4, when asked directly on “Meet the Press,” if he had to uphold the Constitution he replied, “I don’t know. I’m not, I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.” Considering he has twice taken the oath of office swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” this one example should be enough to change some minds.
