Smart Living Home Opens Doors in Canonsburg, Bringing Independence Within Reach for People of All Abilities.
There’s something very exciting happening in Canonsburg.
Arc Human Services, a nonprofit that has been championing inclusion and independence for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 70 years, has just opened its groundbreaking Smart Living Home-a living learning laboratory, packed with assistive technology and ideas to help people of all abilities live more independently.
Whether you’re a parent of an adult child with disabilities, a senior who wants to age in place, or a caregiver seeking better tools to support someone you love-this home is a game changer.
A Place to Dream Bigger
When Mike Smith first stepped inside the Smart Living Home, he was over-come with emotion. His 22-year-old daughter, Sydney, a recent graduate of Slippery Rock’s Rock for Life Program for students with IDD, has been seeking more and more independence, and while he’s always believed in her potential, the road to full independent living felt uncertain-until now.
“I walked in and thought, ‘This is what the future could look like for Sid,’ he says. “There are simple things-like lights that turn off automatically, voice-activated reminders, and a front door that can be locked with the push of a button. These are the kinds of sup-ports that could help her live on her own someday-and do it safely.
Mike’s excitement isn’t just about the tech-it’s about what it represents. “This isn’t a ‘what if’ anymore,” he says. “It’s a ‘when.'”
Independence, with Dignity and Ease
The Smart Living Home showcases everyday technologies-most of them over-the-counter and affordable-that can be life-changing. Think smart speakers that help with schedules, motion sensors that alert caregivers if someone hasn’t gotten out of bed, medication reminders, kitchen cabinets that light up to direct you to ingredients, and more.
The space is designed to feel like any cozy home-just with a few extra touches to make life easier. And while it’s a tool for people with disabilities, it’s also ideal for aging adults who want to remain in their own homes safely and confidently.
“Smart technology helps level the playing field,” says Craig Douglass, Chief Administration Officer of Arc Hu-man Services. “It’s not about the tech itself, it’s about putting real choices in people’s hands and making sure the tools fit their lives, not the other way around.”
A Mission That Matters
Arc Human Services has been doing this work for more than 70 years. Based in Canonsburg, PA, the organization provides supported housing, employment training, and behavioral support services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
Their mission? To help people live lives that are fulfilling, self-directed, and rooted in community.
From supported employment and residential care to fun community events and art programs, Arc Human Services is constantly finding new ways to lift up people of all abilities. The Smart Living Home is the latest-and boldest-step yet.
Open to the Community
The best part? This home is meant to be shared.
The public is invited to schedule a visit and experience the Smart Living Home for themselves. Caregivers, professionals, students, seniors, and anyone curious about assistive technology or independent living supports are welcome.
In-person tours, virtual walk-throughs, and even scheduled trial stays are part of the plan. It’s not just about showing off the space-it’s about starting conversations, sparking ideas, and making independence feel possible for everyone.
“This is what we do best-we teach, and we build trust,” Douglass said. “We know technology is powerful, but it’s just the tool. Our superpower is meeting people where they are and helping them build the confidence to reach where they want to go. We’re just showing them that technology can be a powerful part of the journey.”
For Mike and Sydney, the Future is Closer Than They Thought
“Sydney’s not moving out tomorrow,” Mike says with a smile, “but for the first time, the idea of it isn’t as scary-and with Arc Human Services’ guidance, we know that we’re not alone in this. This isn’t just a house; it’s hope for families like ours.”
And that might just be the most powerful technology of all.
