CANONSBURG, PA – June 29, 2026 – The Canonsburg Educational and Cultural Institute (CECI) today announced the development of the Canon Theatre as its signature project, with the new venue scheduled to open this fall 2026. The Canon Theatre will serve as a premier destination for live performances, educational programming, community events and cultural experiences, and will be the cornerstone of CECI’s vision to establish a vibrant cultural campus in the heart of Canonsburg.

CECI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to championing art, learning and creative expression to enrich Canonsburg and the surrounding region. At the heart of this mission is the Canon Theatre, an ambitious renovation and reimagining of the community’s historic auditorium, formerly part of Canonsburg Middle School.

The Canon Theatre will host a diverse range of programming, including live music, theatrical productions, film screenings, speaker series and community education initiatives. The renovated 560-plus-seat venue will feature a state-of-the-art performance space with modern acoustics, upgraded seating and enhanced accessibility to ensure an inclusive experience for all guests. Flexible event spaces within the theatre will also accommodate community gatherings, private events and partnerships with local schools and organizations.

“The Canon Theatre represents more than a physical space. It is a catalyst for creativity, connection and economic vitality,” said Tony Colaizzo, CECI Board President and Canonsburg business owner. “This project embodies CECI’s commitment to preserving Canonsburg’s heritage while creating new opportunities for future generations. According to CECI’s 2025 Economic Impact Study prepared by Custom Consulting, LLC, the Canon Theatre is projected to generate an estimated $13.8 million in economic impact during its first full year of operation and nearly $250 million over the next two decades. This is an investment in the future of Canonsburg and our entire region.”

“The Washington County Chamber and Tourism Promotion Agency has supported the Canon Theatre project since its inception because of its tremendous potential for our community and region,” said Jeff Kotula, President of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Promotion Agency.

“The theatre will serve as a catalyst for continued business development in downtown Canonsburg while generating long-term benefits for Washington County’s tourism industry. Beyond its economic impact, it will become an important community asset that strengthens our arts and cultural offerings and enhances the quality of life throughout the region.”

The Canon Theatre is expected to drive tourism, increase foot traffic for local businesses and support job creation in the arts, hospitality and service sectors.

“There has been significant investment and growth in Canonsburg’s business community, including the revitalization of Pike Street and the attraction of several new businesses,” said Lisa Scarmazzi, CECI Executive Vice President and co-owner of Scarmazzi Homes. “The presence of the Canon Theatre will further position

Canonsburg as a destination for culture and community-driven experiences while supporting continued local development.

CECI is actively seeking community members, partners and supporters to help bring this vision to life through donations, sponsorships and volunteer involvement.
