High school baseball: Freshman pitches Beth-Center past C-H
Lucas Zeller scored from second base on a throwing error in the top of the seventh inning Monday to give Beth-Center a 7-6 victory over host Chartiers-Houston in Section 2-AA. It was the Bucs’ first loss of the season to a WPIAL opponent
The win improves B-C to 2-1 in the section and 2-2 overall. The Bulldogs received a six-hit complete game from freshman pitcher Lane Ziker, who struck out seven.
B-C forged a 4-0 lead after two innings and led 6-2 before C-H (2-1, 4-3) scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.
Zeller then led off the seventh with a single, moved up a base on a bunt and scored when Josh Miller’s hard grounder to second base was thrown away.
Miller had two of B-C’s four hits, and Matt Riggle had three RBI. Dylan Pounds and Tyler Day each doubled for C-H.
• Fort Cherry remained undefeated in Section 2-AA with an 11-1 five-inning victory over visiting Charleroi.
John Findling and Alex Babirad each doubled and drove in three runs for FC (3-0, 3-2). Koltan Kobrys also doubled for the Rangers, who scored five runs in the third inning. Winning pitcher Matt Heslin struck out five over four innings.
• Undefeated Keystone Oaks won a pitchers’ duel over visiting Trinity, 3-0, in the Section 3-AAA opener.
Winning pitcher Jared Skolnicki threw a four-hitter and struck out five. Nick Riggle and Ryan Ribeau each doubled in a two-run fourth inning for KO (1-0, 6-0).
Don McWreath threw a four-hitter for Trinity (0-1, 2-3). He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
• Zack Bahm threw a two-hitter and Mt. Lebanon scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Peters Township 1-0 in a Section 5-AAAA opener.
Brad Bekampis scored from third base on Darren Zaslau’s one-out single. Bekampis had led off the seventh with a single off losing pitcher Chris Wastchak, who threw a four-hitter. An errant pickoff throw advanced Bekampis to second base and was followed by a sacrifice bunt, setting up Zaslau’s hit.
Bahm struck out six and did not walk a batter.
• Brandon Lawless struck out 15 and allowed only one hit to send Carmichaels past visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 3-0, in Section 1-A.
Tommy Shoaf doubled for the Mikes (1-0, 4-1). Lawless, Mike Blasinsky and Jordan Newman each had an RBI single.
Jordan Dicks had the lone hit for the Rockets (0-1, 2-2), a single in the fourth inning.
• Jordan Mooney hit a three-run home run, a double and drove in five runs to send Washington to a 14-4 victory over visiting Bentworth in Section 2-AA.
Jaylin Kelly went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored for the Prexies (3-0, 4-1). Anthony Bombara was 2-for-3 with a double.
Adam Bell knocked in two runs for Bentworth (1-2, 2-2).
• California won its Section 1-A opener, 12-0 in five innings over West Greene. Winning pitcher Josh Luko struck out five and Aaron Previsky tripled for the Trojans (1-0, 7-2).
West Greene is 0-1, 1-3.
• Shawn Carl and Derek Allen combined for eight RBI – four each – to propel Avella to a 17-0 victory over host Mapletown in a three-inning Section 1-A game.
Walt Kopko had a double and two RBI for Avella, which moved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the section. It’s the best start for the Eagles in the seven-year coaching stay of Jason Fogg.
Ben Boone had a leadoff double for the Maples (0-1, 0-3).
• Canon-McMillan took advantage of 15 walks by Brashear pitchers for a 12-3 victory in the Section 5-AAAA opener.
Brandon Kildare and Justin Davey each had a double for the Big Macs (3-4). Chris Gregorius doubled for Brashear (2-2).
• Chartiers Valley defeated Waynesburg 15-3 in a six-inning, Section 3-AAA game. Aaron Hill tripled for Waynesburg (0-1, 0-4). Jake Ritson was the winning pitcher for CV (1-0, 6-2).
• South Fayette blew a 4-0 lead in the seventh but scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-4 victory from host McGuffey in Section 3-AAA.
Mike Fetchet had a double and singled in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning for the Lions (1-0, 4-2). Zach Walker struck out 13 batters in 6 1/3 innings before Justin Foreman came on to pick up the win.
McGuffey (0-1, 1-4) scored four in the bottom of the seventh. Losing pitcher Chris Keith singled with the bases loaded, Jake Seabright drew a bases-loaded walk and another run scored on an error.
