Softball: Bennington powers West Greene to win
Winning pitcher Bailey Bennington hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning that powered West Greene to a 6-1 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A.
The win was the fourth in a row for West Greene (4-2, 7-2). Bennington, a freshman, pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and helped her own cause with a double. Her three-run homer, which came with two outs, and after two of J-M’s five errors, gave the Pioneers a 6-0 lead. Lauren Weaver also doubled for West Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan fell to 2-5, 4-5.
• Olivia Gray and Delaney Elling each drove in three runs and Trinity remained undefeated with an 8-1 victory over host Ringgold in Section 2-AAA.
Hali Justice went 3-for-3, scored two runs and drove in one as the Hillers improved to 6-0 in the section and overall. Gray had a double for the game’s only extra-base hit, and Madison Hornack had two hits and two runs.
Tiffany Clark was the winning pitcher as the Hillers held Ringgold (2-4, 3-4) to five hits.
Erica Burns retired all nine batters she faced and tripled in two runs to help Carmichaels to a 15-0 three-inning Section 2-A game.
Morgan Berardi and Danielle McClelland each had a two-run single for the Mikes (6-0, 10-1).
• Emily Snee went 4-for-4 with a double and scored three runs to help Waynesburg topple Washington, 15-0, in a five-inning Section 2-AA game.
Felicia Spitz had a double for Waynesburg (3-3, 5-5). Washington fell to 2-4, 2-4.
• Samantha Elliott went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI to power Chartiers-Houston to a 15-0 victory over Fort Cherry in a three-inning Section 2-AA game.
Haley Sutton went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI for the Bucs (6-0, 9-0). Casey Craig and Megan Kraushaar each smacked a double.
Fort Cherry fell to 0-7, including 0-5 in the section.
• Elizabeth Forward did all its scoring in the sixth inning and defeated host Belle Vernon 6-1 in Section 3-AAA.
McKenna Kern had a two-run homer, Caitlyn Arico drove in a run with a triple and Katie Shinavski had a two-run single in the big inning for the Warriors (5-1, 8-1). Shinavski had four of EF’s nine hits.
Nicole Ashcraft and Molly Gauden each had two hits for Belle Vernon (1-5, 2-7).
• Kristen Hardty broke a tie game with an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning and South Fayette defeated visiting West Allegheny 6-4 in Section 2-AAA.
Alie Reid had a triple and Bailey Kormick drove in two runs for South Fayette (2-4, 3-4). Ashley Iagnemma was the winning pitcher.
West Allegheny (2-3, 2-3) was unable to protect an early three-run lead.
• Casey Hite had two hits and three RBI and earned the pitching win by striking out seven, as Bentworth topped Beth-Center, 6-3, in Section 2-AA.
Maddie Alauzen added a double for Bentworth, which improved to 3-2, 3-2.
Beth-Center fell to 1-5, 1-6.
