Softball: CH survives Waynesburg scare

Toni Spossey knocked in what turned out to be the winning run with a groundout in the bottom of the sixth in Chartiers-Houston’s 7-6 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 2-AA game.

Casey Craig had a solo home run and drove in two runs for the Bucs (7-0, 10-0). Kayla Briggs had a triple and Samantha Elliott a double.

Tiffany Ross had a triple and two RBI and Felicia Spitznogle added a triple for the Raiders (3-4, 5-6). Taylor Staley and Jordan Moore each had a double.

• Bentworth outscored Fort Cherry by a combined 28-3 to win a Section 2-AA doubleheader, 12-1 in six innings and 16-2 in five innings.

Natalie Hudak went 4-for-8 and drove in six runs for the Bearcats (5-2, 5-2). Fort Cherry fell to 0-7, 0-9.

Hudak doubled and had three RBI in Game 1. Aubree Yates and Morgan Vickless each had a double and winning pitcher Casey Hites had two. Klarr Diamond doubled for the Rangers.

In Game 2, Hudak doubled and drove in three and Yates doubled. Kayla Heintz had two doubled for FC and Savannah Guidi one.

• Lauren Ackerman and Sydney Zalice each doubled and drove in three runs to help West Mifflin bash Belle Vernon for 23 hits in a 14-9 victory in Section 3-AAA. Molly Gauden doubled for BV (1-6, 2-8). Marla Small and Paige Flore each had two doubles for WM (6-1, 9-1).

• Vicky Lloyd had four hits, while B.J. Simonelli had two doubles, as Avella topped Cornell, 13-3, in a five-inning Section 1-A game.

Jade Georgetti added a triple, and Mikayla Allen doubled to back the pitching of Megan Waddell for the Eagles (2-5, 3-7).

Taylor Riley tripled for Cornell (2-7, 2-7).
