Baseball: Cal, Gannon split key PSAC West doubleheader

In a battle for first place in the PSAC’s West Division, California and Gannon split a doubleheader Saturday at Consol Energy Park. Gannon won the opener, 3-2, but Cal bounced back to win the second game 8-0.

The teams remain tied for first place at 10-4 in the league. The teams play a doubleheader today in Erie.

Cal’s Justin Taylor pitched his third-straight, complete-game shutout and limited Gannon to only two hits. Taylor retired 17 consecutive hitters at one stretch.

Matt Peters had three hits and scored three times for Cal (26-11). Mick Fennell drove in two runs.

Gannon (18-12) won the opener on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie. A.J. Robinson drove in both runs for Cal.

• Waynesburg received strong pitching performances from J. Jay Paskert (Washington) and Brian Resnik (Burgettstown) in a PAC doubleheader split with visiting Thomas More.

Paskert pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game as Waynesburg won 2-0. Thomas More won the opener, 2-1, despite Resnik’s complete game.

After giving up back-to-back hits in the first inning, Paskert did not allow a hit for the rest of the game. He walked only one batter and struck out two in improving his record to 6-3.

The Yellow Jackets gave (7-9, 14-14) gave Paskert the only runs he would need in the sixth inning when Bobby Hartman hit a two-run double that scored Clay Roman and Nick Berdine, who had two of Waynesburg’s four hits.

Thomas More (11-5, 21-8) won the opener by scoring single runs in the third and sixth innings off Resnik, who scattered nine hits in throwing a complete game. Roman had given Waynesburg a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring double in the first inning.

• W&J and Saint Vincent split two PAC games in Latrobe. W&J snapped its four-game conference losing streak by winning the opener 7-2, but Saint Vincent bounced back to win the second game 7-1.

Eddie Nogay pitched a five-hitter in the opener for W&J (13-6, 17-10) to improve his record to 7-1. Kyle McLain had three hits and drove in a run.

Saint Vincent (9-3, 13-11) scored six runs in the fourth inning of the second game. W&J was held to three hits.
